Frequently Asked Questions

With 22 years of experience in the roof cleaning and repair industry, we've been asked a lot of questions about the best ways to maintain and extend the life of a roof. Click the question to see the answer...

Why do I need to maintain my roof?

Moss is one of the most damaging things on your roof. It acts as a sponge and retains water over a long period of time. This as well as debris can cause dams on a roof, stopping water from flowing down and off your roof. If this water is not allowed to run off, it will start to damage the roof.

Roofs are designed to breathe. If a roof is covered by moss and/or debris it cannot breathe properly. The roof will start to rot and decay prematurely.

What is the safest way to clean my roof?

In most cases the safest way to clean a roof is air cleaning. This will remove most moss & debris without causing damage to the roof itself like a high pressure water cleaning would. Air cleaning combined with a good treatment will remove moss and keep it from growing back for at least 1-5 years.

What is air cleaning?

Our air cleaning technique is using 125 pounds per square inch air pressure with a 185 CFM air compressor and a special air wand called an air tuner. This allows us to safely remove moss & debris from your roof and gutters without the added damage caused by a high pressure water cleaning.

What is pressure washing?

Our pressure washers use 1800 pounds per square inch water pressure, at 8 gallons of water volume per minute to clean and remove mildew, moss & debris. Through our experience this is the safest pressure wash for exterior home cleaning other than a roof.

When would a pressure wash be more appropriate than an air clean?

For shake roofs, pressure washing is an instant clean. An air cleaning requires an additional chemical treatment to finish the process. Water is quicker, but it can reduce the life of your roof.

Are backpack air blowers effective in cleaning my roof?

No. If you are looking to remove surface debris (i.e. pine cones, pine needles, leaves, etc.) or moss lodged in keyways, then a backpack blower is not effective enough. Most debris retains a lot of moisture that will damage your roof if it is not completely removed from all cracks and crevices. A backpack blower would not have enough pressure to remove all debris/moss from these types of surfaces, and will keep water from properly draining from your roof.

Is bleach okay to use on my roof?

Absolutely not. Bleach is a natural degreaser that will break down the tar that holds the composite shingle together. All composition roofs, no matter which style, require this tar to help seal out water and hold the shingle together.

Do zinc strips work on my roof?

They do work, but only if placed every two feet down the entire length of your roof, not just along the ridge.

Is it a good idea to use zinc on my roof?

Not really. Zinc is toxic, and is corrosive to other metals such as pipe boots, vent flashings, chimney flashings, and gutters. Also the zinc that is usually used on roofs is in powder form and can easily blow off into your yard where it can kill plant life and make your pets sick.

Zinc will kill the moss & mildew, but is not eco-friendly
